Growing up in Queens, I commuted daily to the Bronx for high school and would make detours downtown on my way home - going to all-ages shows, digging through record stores’ dollar bins and making and sharing mix tapes with friends. I purchased my first pair of turntables and DJ mixer as a college freshman in Brooklyn, and soon met DJs Porkchop and Dirtyfinger, combining forces to work all kinds of bars, clubs, lounges as well as warehouse and block parties. Our events were written up in The New York Times and Paper Magazine, and we three became known for our free-form, mixed-genre format. In January 2011, a series of themed warehouse parties with the the artist Swoon’s Swimming Cities project were named #1 in the city in Time Out New York’s “5 Best Parties” feature. I’ve appeared on WNYU and WFMU radio. I’ve held residencies at high end cocktail lounges as well as dive bars. I still DJ public events when I can, but private event work at weddings and corporate events makes up the bulk of my calendar these days. I don’t rely on “tried-and-true” setlists that don’t fit your vision. Instead, I want to understand your exact tastes, compliment them with what I think would work from my years of experience, and still be flexible to react in real time to what’s actually happening on your dance floor. I also know that the same songs will not work for two different pairs of my clients. For example, I’ve worked events for couples getting married in their early 20s, as well as weddings for couples who are getting married in their 70s! So for those different age ranges, the clients and guests’ tastes would vary widely. Some DJ companies only let you choose 10-20 songs total, and they infill the rest from their standard set list. But what if their standard set list isn’t to your liking? My music design process begins with a blank slate, and you share all your likes and dislikes, giving me as much or as little input as you like. The music of the evening is built around three components - 1. Your specific song requests,&nbsp; as compiled in my planning worksheet. This document provides me with the initial scaffolding to build out the event’s music. 2. I compliment your specific requests by playing songs improvisationally throughout the evening. 3. I read the room, see how the dance floor is feeling and also consider guests requests - working in the good requests you’d enjoy, and tactfully declining the requests that don’t fit your vision. I find that this music design allows for your tastes to be clearly communicated, yet stay flexible to the needs of the party and what is happening in real time. Ian &amp; Jes: “As a music industry professional, the pressure to get the music just right for the wedding was incredibly important for our wedding - especially for a 250-person party 3 hours from NYC in Coxsackie, NY. Not only did James provide the best curation and sound quality we (and our guests) have ever experienced at a wedding, but his thoughtful and calm demeanor provided us the experience we could’ve asked for. He Is truly special. From a curation standpoint, he worked with us to develop the overall sound and feel that fit our tastes but also those of our diverse audience, without relying on the line dances and “wedding hits” that so many other DJs lazily rely on. What felt like a hopeless endeavor because tangible with James’ help, and ultimately very successful. Friends and family, old and young, couldn’t believe how great the music was! I mean this with all sincerity: I’ve never seen a dance floor so packed with so much energy. Shirts being ripped off, ties being connected for a limbo line, songs being sung like anthems. Everything we wanted and more. There were a few potential pitfalls with the audio for our wedding. The ceremony was outside next to the Hudson River, which frequents many motorboats and jet skis that could make our service inaudible. Also, the reception hall was large and not necessary built with acoustics in mind. James went the extra mile to make sure ensure the sound quality would be audible for everyone. He arrived early to run 100+ feet of audio cable between the main space and atrium, set up satellite speakers for background level on the sides of the room, used bigger speakers for the ceremony, and even bought extra gear. These pitfalls never became a factor, even with a parade of boats driving by during the ceremony. Most importantly, James personable and calm demeanor eliminated any worries we had. He MC’d the important moments, chatted with friends and family, and came over to see if we were having a good time. His personality is the reason we picked him in the first place, but he exceeded our lofty expectations. I wish you a fantastic wedding, and if you’re looking for stellar music and an even better experience then James needs to be your DJ. ” Paul &amp; Becca: "James was a huge reason the party was a success. Both my wife and I are musicians and music lovers and having fun, engaging music was really important to us.
